A Message from the Dean
Meet the Dean of Humanities, Dr. Pamela Swett
Welcome! Whether you are a current student, or a prospective one, a parent or someone just browsing to see what we are up to, let me tell you a little bit about ourselves – the dedicated faculty, students and staff in McMaster’s Faculty of Humanities.
We are united in Humanities by the fact that each of us explores human culture. The questions we ask and the methods we employ, however, are as varied as human culture itself. You will find our professors and students in art studios and archives, in experimental laboratories and around seminar tables. We are also seen off campus partnering with community organizations in our region, and we are active beyond Canada’s borders conducting research and learning from others.
Examining human culture in the past or present, at home or abroad, teaches creativity and empathy — two essential skills sought by today’s employers and needed to confront the social and political challenges of today’s societies. Creativity and empathy have always been essential to many rewarding careers: from teaching to journalism, from law to public service. As our economy and daily lives have become more technology-focused, these traits have become even more desirable. Private and public sector employers tell us they seek innovators with the creativity and empathy to understand and thrive in a rapidly changing society.
Our students and faculty produce new knowledge – and with it new understanding – of how people yesterday and today make sense of and engage with the world. That understanding of how to connect with people has never been more necessary in our ever-evolving local and global communities. Our students leave McMaster well prepared to build a Brighter World.
